FIRST 5 LA OFFERS MATCHING FUNDS TO LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS APPLYING FOR FEDERAL STIMULUS GRANTS

LOS ANGELES------To support local agencies, municipalities and community-based organizations’ applications for American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grants, First 5 LA will offer matching funds for grant proposals that serve young children and their families in Los Angeles County.  Passed into law last February, the ARRA is a $787 billion federal stimulus spending bill that provides a variety of funding opportunities.

As California legislators balance the state's budget shortfall, First 5 LA recognizes that securing ARRA grants is critically important in maintaining education and safety net programs for families with children 5 years and under.

In order to be considered for matching funds, organizations must submit completed applications to First 5 LA by 5 pm on June 24.  Upcoming deadlines for ARRA grants are listed below:

ARRA Match Applications must be received by Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 5pm.

ARRA Grant Source and Proposal Due Dates

  • Family Connections Discretionary Grants - July 6
  • Strengthening Communities Fund - July 7
  • Early Head Start/Head Start - July 9
  • Neighborhood Stabilization Program Grants - July 17

To receive matching funds, organizations’ awarded ARRA projects must impact one of the priority measures of First 5 LA’s 2009-2015 strategic plan:

  • Children are born healthy (decrease the percent of children born at a low birth );
  • Children are safe from abuse and neglect (decrease the number of substantiated cases of child abuse and neglect);
  • Children are ready for Kindergarten (increase the percent of children reading at grade level at 3rd grade);
  • Children maintain a healthy weight (decrease the percent of overweight children).

Application deadline to First 5 LA is 5 pm Wed. June 24. Submit applications, as well as any related questions, to ARRA.Support@first5la.org.

To further encourage groups to apply for the federal stimulus grants, First 5 LA is offering technical assistance to ARRA applicants in the following areas:

  • Grant writing workshops,
  • Review of federal grant application processes,
  • Identification of additional ARRA grant opportunities related to the First 5 LA strategic plan priority measures.
