Family Literacy Program Receives Grant

Long Beach Unified School District's Long Beach Family Literacy Program, a First 5 LA grantee, was one of 10 programs in the country to receive a $25,000 grant to encourage Hispanic and other families to earn college degrees. The competitive funding is from the National Center for Family Literacy's Family Literacy-Community College Partnership Initiative, which is supported by the MetLife Foundation. LA Diaper Driver Is a Big Hit at 2011 Social Innovation Fast Pitch

At the annual Social Innovation Fast Pitch event, LA Diaper Drive walked away with both the $20,000 Judges' Award and the $20,000 Los Angeles Social Venture Partners Investee Award. The nonprofit provides diapers to low-income Los Angeles families by partnering with other nonprofits and using free diapers as an incentive to get parents to enroll in classes on parenting, life skills, General Education Development Test preparation and others. Nomination Deadline Extended for LAUP Teacher of the Year

The annual Los Angeles County Preschool Teacher of the Year Award nomination period was extended to Jan. 27. The competition is open to all Los Angeles County preschool teachers. In addition to other prizes, each of the winners will receive $2,000. To learn more or to download a nomination application, click here.

New Appointee to First 5 California Children and Families Commission

Magdalena Carrasco was appointed late last month to the First 5 California Children and Families Commission by Gov. Jerry Brown. Carrasco, 44, of San Jose, is a child development screening specialist at the Gardner Family Health Network and served as a program specialist at First 5 Santa Clara from 2008 to 2009.
