First 5 LA has agreed to allocate $3 million to allow Los Angeles Universal Preschool (LAUP), which is primarily funded by First 5 LA, to continue funding its Early Childhood Education Workforce Initiative (WFI) projects that were launched three years ago. The WFI projects, headed by Randi Wolfe, LAUP’s director of Workforce and Professional Development, ended a 3-year funding cycle on June 30, so the First 5 LA funding is particularly well-timed and greatly appreciated. LAUP’s mission is to increase accessibility to quality preschool among all children in Los Angeles County. “The grant, which is the result of a close collaboration between the two agencies, will allow LAUP to guide the development and implementation of college and high school programs that will excite and promote entry into the field of early care and education,” Wolfe said. “Through the WFI projects, we work to expand the supply of well-trained early care and education (ECE) professionals, increase college graduation rates among ECE students and create systems to ease and improve the transition from community college to university.” First 5 LA’s newly-approved funding will enable LAUP to continue its workforce development efforts on a countywide level, and to improve the level of service provided at the 12 partnering institutions of higher education “This is a wonderful development in the ongoing collaboration between LAUP and First 5 LA, and will result in significant benefits to the early care and education workforce throughout Los Angeles County,” said Celia C. Ayala, LAUP’s chief executive officer.
