First 5 LA Kicks-off Early Literacy Month with a "Red Carpet Affair"

Dressed in Hollywood attire, more than 60 youngsters attended First 5 LA's "Red Carpet Affair" last week kicking off the Southern California First 5 Commissions' third annual "Read Early, Read Aloud" early child literacy campaign at the Julian Dixon Library in Culver City.

The kick-off featured celebrity read-alongs with actress Constance Marie,  well-known for her as role on The George Lopez Show as Lopez's wife, and Emmy Award-winning TV news journalist Alycia Lane, who is an  anchor and general assignment reporter for NBC4. Hot 92.3  radio personality Josefa Salinas, a champion of early literacy, emceed the event.

Participating in the program were First 5 LA Executive Director Evelyn V. Martinez, First 5 LA Commissioner Harriette Williams, L.A. County Head Librarian Margaret Donnellan Todd, and child literacy expert Linda Clinard. Children from various First 5 LA-funded family literacy and school readiness programs were present, along with other families from the community.

For this year's campaign, First 5 LA is  partnering with 13 library systems and some 300 libraries throughout Los Angeles County  to encourage parents to read aloud to their children and to get library cards for themselves and their young children To learn more about the "Read Early, Read Aloud" campaign click here or go to www.readysetgrowla.org.
