Long Beach-------First 5 LA will join the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation and The California Endowment to co-sponsor a special Nutrition Revolution community event on Dec. 17 from 4 to 8p.m. and Dec. 18 from 11a.m. to 3p.m. at the Pacific Coast Campus of Long Beach City College. This weekend event, which is free and open to the community, is part of The Jamie Oliver Food Foundation's "Big Rig Teaching Kitchen" in partnership with The California Endowment's statewide Building Healthy Communities initiative and First 5 LA's Best Start.

Researchers paint a serious picture of obesity rates among Long Beach Unified School District youth, finding disproportionately higher rates of overweight and obesity in central Long Beach, which is also one of the areas of focus for The California Endowment's Building Healthy Communities and First 5 LA's Best Start initiatives in Long Beach.

A flagship for newly formed Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution campaign against obesity is teaching kids life-changing cooking skills and the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation has partnered with First 5 LA and The California Endowment to bring the "Big Rig" campaign to Long Beach.

"The Nutrition Revolution event in Long Beach will feature food demonstrations for parents on healthy cooking, a winter wonderland playground and information and resources on healthy eating," said Melissa Franklin, marketing manager for Best Start. "Cooking with your child and teaching them about shapes, colors and smells will unlock a world of healthy, exciting possibilities for them."

According to Jennifer Chheang, program manager for Long Beach at The California Endowment, there is lot that needs to be done to address the issue of obese and overweight children, especially in certain parts of our city. "Our partnership with First 5 LA and the Jaime Oliver Food Foundation is one of the ways we are all working together to provide opportunities for youth and adults in Long Beach to learn about making healthy food choices."
