U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer's field representative, Juan Camacho, was recently welcomed by a throng of preschoolers and their parents at the First 5 LA-funded 15th Street Family Literacy Program in San Pedro. After accepting an invitation from the program's director Connie McOsker, Camacho visited the site's early childhood education and adult education classrooms, and observed special parent/child interactive time. "It was a very successful visit," said McOsker, who extended the invitation to the elected official to educate her about the Family Literacy model as a holistic approach to education. McOsker was proud to share with Camacho recent evaluation results which show the program's success in preparing children and families for transition to kindergarten and in meeting family goals. During the tour, Camacho commented that he understood the challenges families in the program face because he was one of five children and his own mother wanted to go to school but didn't know how. "It was clear that the representative felt a personal connection to the work we do here," said McOsker. By the end of the tour he was a big fan and supporter, she reported. The 15th St. Family Literacy Program is part of LAUSD's Harbor Community Adult School and welcomes visitors. If you have questions, please call Connie McOsker at (310) 547-4425. |
