Evie's Desk: Resources and the Community Opportunities Fund

For this special issue on the Community Opportunities Fund (COF), I'd like to share a few excellent resources that can help organizations in their capacity building and policy and advocacy efforts.

First, if you would like to apply for COF funds, attend one of the informational sessions that will be held throughout the county. These sessions provide a forum for you to ask questions and learn what First 5 LA is looking for. Click here for the time and dates of these sessions.

To do research on your own, the Center for Nonprofit Management has a resource library open to anyone wanting to learn about non-profits and nonprofit management. Located on the first floor of the California Endowment, the resource library is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from noon to 5pm, and Tuesday and Thursday from 10am - 3pm.

Another helpful tool is the Web site Healthy City 3.0. This tool can be used to find other organizations with which you can collaborate as well as learn about a community's demographic information. You can also upload your own information into the mapping system, and share information with other organizations.

Also, the Alliance for Justice offers a variety of tools and access to workshops, research, and other publications targeted specifically to assist nonprofits in learning best practices for conducting policy and advocacy work.

I wish all of those considering applying for this fund good luck!

Evelyn V. Martinez
Executive Director
