Evie's Desk: Reflections on the Feria del LibroJune 16, 2008 |
Printer-friendly version |
June 7th was a special day for more than 35,000 children, parents and teachers attending Feria del Libro: A Family Book Fair. Lining the streets around city hall were celebrities, educators and more than 200 vendors ready to inspire children to love of books and learning. A parade led by the event coordinators and the drum team from a local school opened the day long event. The main stage featured Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and LAUSD Board President Monica Garcia, who welcomed the families and touted the importance of reading. Along the streets, vendors demonstrated literacy-related activities such as book-making and other related crafts. A story telling booth where kids could sign up for story time and then make bookmarks was coordinated by nine First 5 LA School Readiness grantees. Among the highlights of the day were book signings at the booths and performances on the two stages by local school dance troupes and other musical groups. Also participating with booths were the L.A. County Office of Education and our First 5 LA contractor Los Angeles Universal Preschool. First 5 LA shared a booth with the First 5 California Hands on Health Van, which encourages health related literacy. I hope you enjoy some of the photos we took at the event, capturing the spirit of learning. Click here to see the photos. Evelyn V. Martinez
