November 10, 2008

Printer-friendly version
Emphasizing the message of November's Literacy campaign, Read early, read ALOUD, First 5 LA recently released the second edition of our Ready. Set. Grow! Family Guide with a literacy-related theme. The guide is printed on recycled paper and has several literacy-related tips and resources. Also included are coupons for family-friendly destinations throughout L.A. County and a page with nursery rhymes and games to play with children.

The Guides are available at WIC centers, L.A. County libraries, area Farmer's Markets, as well as many First 5 LA grantee sites. If you would like to be added to our list of partners distributing upcoming editions of the Family Guide, please contact Katie Kurutz, Public Affairs Officer at kkurutz@first5la.org. Click here to learn more about the Read early, read ALOUD! campaign events.

I have listed below some of the information in the guide to give you an idea of what is in it.

  • Reading skills develop in the first 5 years of life. You can see them in a baby who laughs at funny pictures, a toddler who wants his favorite book read over and over and a preschooler who "reads" the story to you from memory.
  • Reading early in any language is very important for future success in reading English.
  • Children under the age of 5 who are read to regularly are better prepared for school.
