July 21, 2008

Printer-friendly version
After successfully completing six information sessions throughout L.A. County, the Community Opportunities Fund team is anxiously awaiting applications. Thanks to all who attended the sessions and expressed interest in this exciting grants program. We hope sessions helped you determine how your application might take shape.

I encourage those interested in applying for a grant to use this week to polish up your letters of intent and required documentation. The final due date for the letter and documentation is next Monday, July 28th at 5 p.m.

Eligibility Requirements for the funds are as follows:

  • Nonprofit organizations must have evidence of tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and deemed "not a private foundation" under Section 509 (a). Those applicants or sponsored projects lacking 501(c)(3) status must have a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization serving as a fiscal sponsor
  • Public agencies may apply for policy and advocacy grants, but are not eligible for organizational capacity building grants
  • Applicant organizations must reside within and serve residents of Los Angeles County
  • Proposed project activities must ultimately benefit children age prenatal through five years old

Also, just a reminder that while First 5 LA will continue to fund direct services for children ages 0-5 and their families through other investments, COF grants may not be used to fund direct services. First 5 LA provides two types of COF grants: Organizational Capacity Building and Policy and Advocacy. These grants must support long-term sustainable change for L.A. County's young children and families in the following three areas: Supportive Parents and Caregivers, Good Health (including nutrition, physical activity, and oral health) and Prevention of Unintentional Injuries.
