These are hard financial times, and many L.A. County residents caught in the subprime mortgage crisis are facing bankruptcy or homelessness. While these circumstances can be difficult for adults, they may have an even greater negative impact on children. To help homeowners keep their homes and reduce the stress on their kids, they can now get help by calling a new hotline from the non-profit Operation HOPE.

Equipped to handle up to 1,000 calls a day, the Mortgage HOPE Crisis Hotline number is (877) 592-HOPE (4673) and is free to the caller. Staffed by trained HOPE Corps volunteers, including professionals from the mortgage industry, call center staff help homeowners establish realistic budgets and assist them in negotiating new mortgage payments.

The Managing Director of the HOPE Coalition of America, Fred Smith, said the number one message to families with financial concerns is to get help early. As soon as a family has trouble making the mortgage payment, they should call the Mortgage HOPE Crisis Hotline. Late fees and penalty's make the debt worse, and in some cases insurmountable. But there are solutions. If you or a family you know is having trouble, please call or share this number. Remember, stability is imperative for a child's health and well being. Avoiding foreclosure may be the best thing a parent can do for that stability.
