Evie's Desk: Earned Income Tax CreditFebruary 4, 2008 |
Printer-friendly version |
The American economy appears to be slowing, and I'd like to remind families who are feeling the crunch that they may be eligible for a little tax relief. The federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a refundable federal tax credit that can return as much as $4,716 to working families earning less than $39,783 per year. These monies can be received in advance of tax filing, and can be applied retroactively for those eligible who did not apply up front. Many families don't know that the credit is available, or don't know how to apply. This results in almost 20 percent of eligible households missing out on their EITC yearly. To find out about the free tax preparation services available to eligible L.A. County families, residents can simply call (888) FIRST5-LA to find a local Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site. To learn more about the EITC click on the following Web sites: An educational PowerPoint presentation is also available. Click here to download the presentation.
