Evie’s Desk: Give the Gift of Quality Time

We all have such busy schedules, especially this time of year. What often gets lost in the shuffle is quality time with our families – which, really, should be a priority all year long, especially with younger children. When parents take time to play with their children every day, it boosts the child’s self esteem and helps them develop positive relationships. Even 10 to 30 minutes of one-on-one time a day is a good start. And young children will love the attention they receive during these precious moments.

This holiday season, parents, grandparents and other caregivers are encouraged to give the gift of time by planning educational and nurturing activities everyone can enjoy together through the holidays and into the new year. Looking for a resolution to start 2011? Try one that focuses on family quality time, such as:

  • Start a tradition by planning a family meal at least once a week. Eating together provides a wonderful opportunity to talk with your children about their day, show them they are a top priority and get them involved by giving them jobs, like setting the table and tossing the salad. This is also a great opportunity to model healthy eating habits, too!
  • Read together everyday. Enjoying books with your child helps their imagination soar and is proven to give children a pre-kindergarten learning boost.
  • Host a weekly family fun night. Turn off the television and the computer and get creative. Set up a row of chairs and pretend you’re on a train or a bus, or play musical chairs. Find everyday household items, like cotton balls or cardboard boxes, and make art.
  • Take a field trip to the zoo, museums or the library to learn about animals, interesting historical facts and other educational topics. Many places offer discounts or free children’s days, so call ahead or look them up online.
  • Go outside for a walk, a bike ride, a game of catch or an outing to the park. It’s a great chance to spend time together and squeeze in a healthy dose of active play.

Quality time with you child is a priceless gift that costs nothing and means everything. For more information on promoting your child’s healthy development with activities, visit our parenting website at www.readysetgrowla.org.

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season and a prosperous New Year!
