More than two million residents of the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys now will be served by a new Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) facility in Chatsworth. Los Angeles County Supervisor and First 5 LA Commission Chair Zev Yaroslavsky and DCFS staff participated in the ribbon-cutting and grand opening of the new building on Friday, November 9th. The building will house approximately 400 employees tasked with assisting members of the public with issues ranging from child abuse and neglect, to family reunification and adoption. DCFS Chatsworth will partner with the Department of Social Services, Department of Mental Health, the Probation Department, and a variety of community-based organizations such as the Valley Trauma Center and Friends of the Family, which integrates community services and resources to better assist children and their family. The office will serve one of the most diverse populations and largest service planning areas in L. A. County. The new building and its built-in resources will provide added support to employees as they work to ensure the well-being of children throughout the county. The DCFS child abuse and neglect hotline receives approximately 1,500 calls and oversees 900 open cases daily. The opening ceremonies were followed by a reception with the Heart Gallery, one of many organizations committed to finding loving homes for adoptable children and guided tours of the facility.
