Last Thursday, Univision Channel 34 viewers got to watch the popular Chef La La, First 5 California and supermarket chain Vons promote healthy eating in the form of a game. In the style of the game show "Supermarket Sweep," three competing families had approximately one minute to rush through a Vons supermarket and choose foods that would make a healthy dinner. Chef La La then determined the winner based on which family filled their baskets with food items that would create the healthiest meal. The event, held at the Vons on Vermont and 3rd street in Los Angeles, was a part of First 5 California's anti-obesity campaign aimed at reducing childhood obesity in California. Statistics show that one in three California children is overweight or at risk of becoming overweight; and recent research suggests infants and children who are overweight at any point are more likely to remain overweight and even become obese by age 12. Chef La La is known for promoting healthy Latin cuisine in the Spanish-speaking community. The Chef, whose real name is Laura Diaz-Brown, is adamant about educating the public about healthy foods, linking what she knows about pulmonary disease and nutrition to the way people eat through what she suggests in her recipes. At the end of the event each family received a Vons gift certificate, a copy of Chef LaLa's recent cookbook, a Kit for New Parents and a T-shirt from First 5 California. This event kicked-off First 5 California's partnership with Chef LaLa to educate Latino families about healthy eating. In early 2008, First 5 California will distribute a recipe booklet - both in English and Spanish - full of healthy recipes created by Chef LaLa. Click here to learn more about Chef La La. |
