In October, the Monday Morning Report featured Noah Ogata, a 5 year-old Champion for adults, who, with help from his family, started Project Star, a program to collect blankets for L.A. County’s homeless. Noah’s Mother, Wendy Ogata, recently updated us on Project Star.Since the story ran, Noah and his family have collected more than 500 blankets for homeless individuals, said Ogata, a counselor with the Homeless Education and Teen Parent Program through LAUSD. Blanket contributors came from as far away as Hawaii, Nebraska, Oregon, Washington and Virginia; and of course close to home as well. Project Star worked with nine social service agencies in the Los Angeles and Hollywood areas to distribute the blankets to those in need over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Noah's story has been featured in L.A. Parent Magazine, a Daily News Blog, and Bookends, an L.A. based non-profit organization. He was also personally invited to an L.A. Clippers game by Clippers player Brevin Knight and his wife, Deena, a social service advocate. In early November the Clippers partnered with Project Star, and, as part of their own holiday clothing drive, encouraged blanket donations to the Project. Noah and his family would like to thank everyone who participated in making this project come alive. To view Noah's personal thank you click here (pdf). Project Star is currently not taking any more donations, but if you are interested in donating blankets to homeless youth age 12-17, please contact the Los Angeles Youth Network at (323) 467-8466. |
