Patricia Ploehn is director of the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), an organization focused on protecting children from mistreatment, with an annual budget of more than $1.7 billion and approximately 7,300 staff. Appointed by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Ploehn oversees the administration of protective services for child victims of abuse, neglect, exploitation or abandonment as well as services for foster and out-of-home care and adoption. Born in Lakehurst, NJ, Ploehn called many places home her first 12 years. The daughter of a naval officer, she lived in several states including Virginia, Florida, Hawaii, Ohio, and Washington D.C. until finally settling in California. She graduated from California State Los Angeles, with a degree in sociology and went on to receive a master's of social work from California State Long Beach. She is also is licensed clinical social worker. Entering into the workforce with a desire to be of service to others, Ploehn began her career at DCFS as a treatment counselor working with children and youth at the MacLaren Children's Center. She went on to work as a social worker and supervisor within the department until she was promoted to management. Ploehn's administrative positions included training and education, emancipation services, strategic planning, and adoptions and permanency services. Plohen was promoted to deputy director of DCFS in 2003 and was then chosen as director in 2006. She is the first director in the history of the organization to be selected from within the Department. As a leader, Ploehn frequently reminds her staff what she wants for all at-risk children of Los Angeles County: increased safety, reduced reliance on DCFS and foster and adoptive care, and swift family stabilization and reunification.
