First 5 LA is the Commission created to serve Los Angeles County and to distribute Proposition 10 funds to support programs for children prenatal to five years of age. The First 5 LA mandate is to be a dynamic force for change in Los Angeles County - that not only uses its resources to identify needs and fund innovative initiatives, but also uses this opportunity to rally other partners in support of a mutual vision of a better future for Los Angeles County children. Since 1998, First 5 LA has provided more than $800 million in grants and programs to ensure the children of Los Angeles County get the best start in life. Types of Grants While First 5 LA continues to fund direct service supports for young children, the Commission also provides grants for systems improvement, capacity building and policy and advocacy. Funding this type of activities are intended to contribute to the long-term vision of the Commission and create effective and sustainable change for communities. Funding Principles First 5 LA's funding decisions are guided by the following principles: Early Learning by funding programs and activities that improve all children's attainment of their developmental potential. Health by funding programs and activities that improve access to and the quality of health resources and other health enhancing approaches for pregnant women, young children, and their families. Safe Children and Families by funding programs and activities to strengthen support to families so that they can safely raise their children. Prenatal through Three Focus by funding programs and activities to develop activities focused on children from prenatal through three years of age. Restricted Activities First 5 LA will not fund the following:
