Over the past three decades, the proportion of overweight children in the United States has almost tripled. Among preschoolers, the prevalence of overweight is about 14%; children 6-11 years, almost 19%; and adolescents aged 12-19 years, over 17%. Approximately one in three children and one in four teens in California is estimated to be overweight.
